Kentucky State Police are investigating a crash yesterday morning in Tompkinsville that claimed the life of 24-year-old Tiffany Porter. She was the only passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, 22 yr old Joshua Porter, both of Tompkinsville. Police say the couple was traveling north on KY 163 when their vehicle hydroplaned and slid into the path of a pickup driven by Raymond Martin of Edmonton. Joshua Porter was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center with serious injuries while his wife, Tiffany was pronounced dead at the Monroe County Medical Center; neither were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. Mr Martin, who was belted, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
A man convicted of murders in Kentucky and three other states is headed to death row. A Hardin County judge issued the ultimate penalty yesterday to 54-year-old Michael St. Clair.
The Metcalfe County Sheriff’s Dept., wants to warn citizens about a possible scam. A company called HomeServe is soliciting water line insurance coverage in the area. It's reported a number of people have received a letter in the mail advertising insurance for a monthly fee. According to the Better Business Bureau this company has had 137 complaints filed against them. Sheriff Shirley says he cannot confirm it is a definite scam, but he advises citizens to use extreme caution.
Motorists soon might be able to legally drive at the speed many of them already do on U.S. 68-Ky. 80 if legislation proposed by state Rep. Jim DeCesare is approved. DeCesare wants to raise the speed limit on the road to 60 mph in any place where it currently is 55 mph. The proposal as it stands now would raise the speed limit in areas of 55 mph from the William H. Natcher Parkway to Christian County.
Residents in the Bluegrass State are being asked to learn how to protect themselves during American Heart Month in February. Heart disease is the number one killer for men and women, and most have no idea what to look for to avoid serious problems. The deadline for legislative candidates to file is being pushed back to next Tuesday. The deadline was initially set for yesterday, but Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd stepped in and postponed it. There is a hearing scheduled for Monday on a temporary injunction over redrawing of boundaries for the state house, senate and Supreme Court districts.
A WKU student suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, in an alleged altercation off campus.
There are conflicting reports; According to Bowling Green Police Dylan Nonweiler, a Western junior from Owensboro, was attacked by three men on 14th Avenue, early Sunday morning. His girlfriend, Ashlee Nickelson, told police the three men jumped out of a passing car. But, an eye-witness from across the street says he saw Nonweiler and his girlfriend arguing, and Nonweiler pushed her, the eye witness says an unknown suspect knocked Nonweiler out. Since Nonweiler's head injuries are potentially life-threatening he was flown to Vanderbilt.
A new study shows Kentuckians are doing little to save for the future. Nearly 28 percent of the population have little to no money saved for a possible hardship, like job loss or major car repair. Vermont had the nation's best asset poverty rate at 15 percent, while Georgia ranked last in the nation at 51 percent.
"American Pickers" from the History Channel could make an appearance in the BluegrassState. The popular television treasure hunt show thrills audiences in search of special items in junk piles. Pickers Mike and Frank are looking for old bicycles, sports collectibles, vintage signs and toys.
If you're looking for a job, Opry Mills might be the place to go. Many of the mall's businesses are posting openings on its Facebook page. Plans are in the works to boost music education in Kentucky. Governor Steve Beshear and Kentucky Music Hall of Famer Tom T. Hall will headline a news conference today to announce a special project to promote music and arts education in schools. Mum's the word on the details, but a press release says the program will build on the legacy of other Hall of Fame artists who hail from Kentucky, including Ricky Skaggs, Crystal Gayle and Loretta Lynn.
Kentucky prisoners who won early release through a budget cutting program could end up back behind bars. State prison officials say 75 parolees have already received violations and more than 40 have failed to report to a supervisor. More than 950 inmates were released earlier this month in a program to ease prison costs and cut down on the prison population.
YesterdayHigh school students and their parents toured WesternKentuckyUniversity during Spring Review Day for minority students. Everyone had a chance to learn about resources and opportunities at the school. The day included a campus stroll, academic expo, and meeting department representatives plus sessions on financial assistance and programs.
The search continues in Hart County for 19-year-old Brandon Crain. Officials say he was last seen at his mother's house in Munfordville last Thursday. Family members told deputies he left during the night without his wallet and cell phone. Hart County Sheriff's deputies say there's no indication of foul play. Right now, they don't have any further leads, but are checking every credible lead that comes to them.
Police in Bowling Green are tired of seeing the writing on the wall. Officers want to catch those spreading unsightly artistry around the city. Graffiti is seen on buildings, gas pumps, trash cans and bridge overpasses. Officer Ronnie Ward reports the price tag to remove the unwanted designs is 500-dollars.
Kentucky drivers are seeing more red at the pump than those across the nation. KentuckyGasPrices.com reports a more than 14-cent jump for a gallon of regular unleaded. That's around triple of the national average increase; The Kentucky average is three-42, with Bowling Green posted at 3-46.
Music City is retiring its most famous stage this week after 61 years of performances. The Ryman Auditorium is replacing its oak stage with one they say will be more durable and triples its load capacity. The old stage served as the home of the Grand Ole Opry for more than 20 years and supported the feet of legends like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Louis Armstrong. Keith Urban's Opry at the Ryman concert Friday will be its last show.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Taliban are off to a rough start. The militant group refused to agree to an American demand for a cease-fire. They're negotiating an exchange of Taliban soldiers held at Guantanamo, for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who has been held by the Taliban since 2009.
A Kentucky sailor is dead following a training accident; Second Class Petty Officer Taylor Gallant was a part of diving operations near North Carolina on Thursday. Navy officials are investigating. The Winchester native has served in the military branch since 2008.
The search continues for a missing Hart County teenager. The family of 19-year-old Brandon Crain says he slipped away from his mother's Munfordville home Thursday, leaving behind his wallet and cell phone. Hart County sheriff's deputies say there's no evidence of foul play. Crain's sister said he has been a victim of bullies and suffers from depression.
Sixty Kentucky high school seniors are heading to college with a little extra help. Scholarships were awarded over the weekend, courtesy of Touchstone Energy Cooperatives. The awards went to students at some of the low-enrollment schools around the state. They will each get one-thousand-dollars.
Meeting the new federal sign requirements for all roads is going to be extraordinarily expensive; according to county officials not only did the sate change the reflective requirements, but they are changing the size of some signs. The faster the speed limit, the larger the sign must be.
The changes should make the signs more readable for older drivers; the deadline for the change is currently set for 2015 or 2018, depending on the signs.
Some Nashville contestants are hoping they make the final cut to appear on an upcoming CMT talent show. Over a hundred hopefuls auditioned at the Marriott hotel near Vanderbilt University over the weekend for the show that judges contestants on how well they know song lyrics and music trivia. Their first task was to take a quiz. Nashville was the second in a five-city casting call for the show scheduled to start taping on February 28th.
SPORTS: Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall had six catches for 177 yards and four touchdowns as the AFC toppled the NFC, 59-41, in the Pro Bowl. Marshall was named the game's MVP. It was the highest scoring game in Pro Bowl history. Each conference has now won the contest 21 times.

Health officials say the rise in monthly Medicare premiums next year won't impact elderly Americans as much as first expected. Standard premiums for Medicare Part B will be just under a hundred dollars. That means a rise of three-and-a-half dollars, compared to a more than ten-dollar jump that was expected.
An horrific crash on the Indiana Toll Road leaves seven people dead and four others recovering from injuries. A minivan carrying ten people and a semi truck collided last night just east of South Bend. Indiana State Police investigators say all of the dead were in the minivan
A majority of Kentucky counties are experiencing a downward trend in unemployment figures. The state Office of Employment and Training says the jobless rates fell in 72 counties statewide. Woodford County has the lowest at just over seven-percent, while Fulton County has the highest at more than 17-percent.
Investors hope Wall Street can come up with another big day as the week closes. Yesterday, the Dow closed with a big gain of 339 points. Investors are enthusiastic about a long-awaited agreement out of the EU that could help Europe tackle its debt crisis.
The Statue of Liberty turns 125 years old today. To honor the occasion the National Park will throw a party complete with a re-creation of her original dedication on October 28th, 1886. The statue's official name given by the original artist is "Liberty Enlightening The World."

A Scottsville man died this week-end in an ATV crash in Simpson County.20 yr old Zackery Ross was traveling west on Harris Road, failed to negotiate a curve and ran off in a ditch.According to State Police Ross was not wearing a helmet, and was thrown from the ATV and was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police also report that eleven people lost their lives on Kentucky roads this past week.Six of the fatalities involved motor vehicles, and five of the victims were not wearing seat belts.There were three fatal crashes involving motorcycles, and one victim was not wearing a helmet.Two fatal crashes involved ATV's, and neither victim was wearing a helmet.Through July 31st 389 people have died on Kentucky roads so far this year.
A warning is being issued by the Better Business Bureau about a scam involving the KFC name. Consumers are seeing e-mails claiming to be from Yum Brands, which is KFC's parent company. The message says you get a 100-dollar KFC gift card by filling out a survey. The survey is a scam that allows you to be contacted by numerous telemarketers. Anyone receiving the e-mail should delete it.

Japan's Nuclear Safety Agency says reports released earlier today that water in a nuclear reactor was ten-million times more radioactive than normal was incorrect. Tokyo Electric tested the water again and found radiation 100-thousand times normal in reactor number 2.
President Obama is facing pressure to clear up U.S. intentions in Libya. President Obama will address the nation at 6:30 tonight about the country's involvement in Libya. One topic the President will discuss is the hand over of command and control to NATO and what's next for U.S. forces participating in the no-fly zone over Libya.
Glasgow's Police Department will be under new leadership; the city's new chief of police is Chief Guy Turcotte. The new chief says his first task on the job will be meeting with all his employees and figuring out the department's strengths and weaknesses.
30-year-old Charece Rochelle Haskins of Cave City Grove entered a guilty plea in Barren Circuit Court; among her charges are reckless homicide, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, disorderly conduct, and being a persistent felony offender. The Commonwealth is recommending she serve a ten-year sentence. Haskins had a wreck August 1, 2008 in which her passenger, Harley Turner, was killed.
Hikers stranded in the Great Smokies are safe and sound this morning. The group from Nashville, including a three-year-old, was found yesterday. Apparently one of the four group members injured an ankle, and rather than continue, the group decided to stay overnight to wait for help. Three of the hikers had to be treated for hypothermia.
The inventor of Super Glue has died. Harry Coover got the idea for the glue during a lab accident while he was working at Eastman Kodak in the 1950's. Coover died Saturday of congestive heart failure. He was 94.
SPORTS: For the first time with John Calipari behind the bench, the University of Kentucky is headed to the Final Four. The Cats beat back an impressive North Carolina team yesterday 76-69 to earn the right to take on U-Conn April 2nd. Brandon Knight led the Wildcats with 22 points, Liggins and Harrellson netted 12 points apiece.
